The Caribbean Dominican Republic is the second largest country in the Caribbean Sea. In Polish my mother tongue, it is the neighbouring country Haiti that gave name to the island but in English and Spanish it still preserves it’s original name of Hispaniola.

The first European on the Dominican land was Christopher Columbus, who reached its shores in December 1492 and called it Hispaniola. Columbus, captivated by the island’s beauty, chose it as his headquarters – it was here, in the  that the Navidad fort was built and it was here that the famous sailor left some of the crew on his way back to Spain. Some time ago, I was also able to see the exceptional beauty of this corner – I spent my vacation here.

More than beautiful beaches

Most of us associate the Dominican Republic primarily with one destination, which is Punta Cana. Indeed, it is a very attractive tourist area, full of luxurious hotels and amazing beaches, so I perfectly understand its holiday popularity. But the Dominican Republic has so much more to offer.

Santo Domingo

The capital of the state is also the oldest European settlement in this region of the globe. Its Zona Colonial – as the name suggests – remembers the times of European colonization. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it has an amazing climate and is steeped in history. Anyway, the entire capital is a very interesting place, completely different from what we know from the cities of our continent. You can feel the Caribbean vibes at every step.

Amazing nature

The Dominican Republic is famous for its amazing nature, so it should not be surprising that the number of national parks here is really impressive – there are as many as 16 of them. You can see numerous specimens of the Caribbean fauna in them. I really wanted to see the palmchat (which in Spanish is called La Cigua), i.e. the bird that is the national symbol of the Dominican Republic, and I did. This small passerine bird lives only on this island, especially on the Dominican side.

On the coast of the Dominican Republic you can also meet humpback whales – these huge sea mammals come here during the mating season and you can hear their famous singing.

The beaches, of course 🙂

Dominican Republic is famous for the most beautiful beaches in the world. Turquoise water, fair sand, palm trees, pleasant temperature and sun – can you dream about anything more while relaxing on vacation? I myself had the opportunity to see that there is no exaggeration in the words of those who are delighted with this country. The most famous tourist destination is Punta Cana – I am particularly fond of the local Playa Bavaro, which simply “knocked me off my feet”. But all of Dominican Republic is full of amazing beaches.

How to get there?

The good news is that there are non-stop flights from Poland to the Dominican Republic. Once there, you can take advantage of a very wide hotel offer. However, if you want to spend special moments away from the tourist crowds and in the best locations, you should think about a tailor-made offer. My company Crystal House can organise it for you as part of the concierge service, so feel free to write to me or call me and we will do the rest 🙂

  1. Dominican Republic is a lovely country but what’s special is the amazing people that lives there.

  2. The bird is not the palmchat. It is the Cigua. And it lives in all areas of the Dominican Republic not Haitii since this part of the island is drier.

    1. Thank you for your comment. As far as I am aware la cigua is precisely palmchat in English. In any case I have now added the Spanish word for it to make it absolutely clear 🙂

    2. We have been there three times it’s such a beautiful country and the people a wonderful and nice and polite I can’t wait until the day we go back

    1. Thank you for your comment – as I have said in another of my replies, I have amended the island’s name 🙂

    2. Actually buddy, I believe the Tainos used to call the hole island “Haiti”; that was what he mentioned in the article.

    3. Well, per this article: https://www.britannica.com/place/Hispaniola
… Some believes that the island used to be called both Haiti and Quisqueya… I’m dominican, and I was teaches the Tainos called Haiti… Now, I’m just wondering to know if in part many dominicans don’t like the idea that the whole island was named “Haiti” because of the racism that was teaches to us or for the ancient political tension between DR and Haiti.

  3. Well good try, but fail in something the Island name, never was or being Haiti, tha is the name of the country of Haiti. They wish that. The original name of the island Quisqueya ( mother of all lands) them Cristobal Colom named Hispaniola, this article is misleading the people regarding the name.

    1. You are right, thank you for correcting me! It is Hispaniola in English – my mistake came from the fact that in Polish (which is my mother tongue) the island is called Haiti and I assumed – wrongly, I can see it now – it would have the same name in English 🙂

  4. Jesucrist love everyone; no matter who you are.
Come to Jesus and he will make you free of Sins.
God bless to my beautiful people.
Peace in the name of the Lord Almighty 🙏

  5. Hi Mr. Luxury. I’m dominican and liked the article.
Many believe the island was never called Haiti but I believe it was. Perhaps I am wrong in my knowledge but I found an article that mentions that the island used to be called both “Haiti” and “Quisqueya”. If anybody found sustantial unbiased information that can explain why can’t be possible that it was called “Haiti” as well please share with me. My suspicious is that dominican tend to negate this because it’s a negative acquisition of identy from “our” view. I’m dominican, and I know we are reached to don’t get along with Haitian and to be racist toward them; maybe this is one of the reason we don’t want the island be called Haiti by the Tainos?

  6. Comment*la razón e suya..si bien se llamo quisquella la llamaban haci los indigena, cuando la colonización le llamaron la hispaniola como isla y como país Haití..

  7. Such a beautiful country I just can’t wait until will be able to go back good food good entertainment wonderful people

  8. Thanks for your support and love for our marvelous country.
