Krayon Everywhere: A new take on the classic men’s timepiece?
In late September, I took part the Esquire Night Time event, dedicated to luxury men’s watches. The timepiece that instantly caught my eye was the Krayon Everywhere manufactured by a small Swiss company. It was presented by its maker, Remi Maillat.
High-end watches
Esquire Night Time is an event celebrating the best men’s styles and the world of sophisticated horology. The most desired and renowned luxury men’s timepieces nominated to the “Esquire Timepieces of the Year” awards were showcased during the gala.
To me, the Krayon Everywhere was the brightest star of the evening. I have seen many watches in my life but this was, without a doubt, one of the most remarkable ones I have ever come across. The mechanical watch is a highly complex device. It can show with utmost precision the time of sunset and sundown in every location. I am convinced that if the Nobel prize were ever awarded in Horology, the Krayon Everywhere and its maker would be a strong candidate for the winner.
Who is Remi Maillat, the brains behind the Krayon brand and the watch itself? He graduated from a prestigious school in the Swiss town of Le Locle. The love for timepieces runs in his blood. Maillat’s father was working in the same industry and engineered advanced micro metric solutions.
Krayon is the first watch to show the length of the day with high precision
How is it possible for the Krayon to show the time of the sunset and sundown so precisely in any part of the world? Remi Maillat admits that he designed a very complex mechanism. The timepiece is fitted with a 595-part Universal Sunrise Sunset caliber – a universal mechanical calculator. It has 4 differentials, 84 gear assemblies, 145 gear parts and 85 jewels. As its maker says himself, there had not been anything like it in the history of horology to date.
Only 5 Krayon Everywhere timepieces have been made. Why is that? Because each is made to order. Remi Maillat goes by the rule that it is the client who decides on what his or her watch will look like. You can order special engravings, or have specific metals or even diamonds used in the timepiece. The ornaments are made by hand with the use of traditional techniques. This is the reason why it takes Remi and his team some 2 years to make one Krayon Everywhere watch. Once all the components are manufactured, which takes a few thousand man-hours of labour, they all have to be pieced together. This process may take up to 2 months!
The price? Well, it really depends on the client’s imagination and starts at PLN 2,276,000.
