Everything you need to known about the men’s suit jacket

When I had a jacket made for me a while back, I thought it would be a good idea to write a post dedicated to this crucial part of the male attire.

The jacket – apart from trousers – must be the piece of male clothing that comes in the largest number of variations. Different cuts, fabrics and patterns make it possible to find a jacket for any occasion. Jackets are worn both in winter and summer, to work, casual events, and can be paired with both chinos and smart trousers. This is why I’ve written a post from which you will learn (almost) everything you need to know about the suit jacket.

Vents

Vents are the slits on the back that are responsible for how the jacket lies on the body towards the bottom of the back. Single-vents are typical of casual jackets and double vents are usually used in day suits. No-vent jackets are usually part of dinner suits and tuxedos.

Lapels

Well-cut lapels lie flat on the chest. In principle, we distinguish three types of lapels. Stepped lapels are the most popular and are used in work suits and day suits. Peak lapels can be found and formal jackets. The other type of lapel is the shawl lapel that are used in dinner jackets and tuxedos.

The notch

This is the place where the lapels are joined to the collar. The most popular has a nearly right angle.

The button hole

The buttonhole is the small opening on the left lapel. It was once used to button up the top button but today, is used for decoration purposes only. You can wear a butonniere or a pin there.

Buttons

The number of buttons and their placement is what makes a jacket a single-breasted or a double-breasted. Single-breasted jackets have, as the name suggests, a single line of buttons, and the double-breasted version has two.

How to wear a jacket in an elegant way?

An elegant man must remember a number of rules that apply to wearing this part of clothing. Firstly, the bottom button is always left open.If a suit has three buttons, only use the middle one. When you want to sit down, you unbutton all the buttons of a single-breasted jacket. When wearing a double-breasted jacket, you sit down without unbuttoning it. The jackets pockets are for decoration and actually should not be used to carry anything.
