It was an unplanned holiday, but – as is often the case – one of the best of my life. Together with my fiancée Isa and a group of our Italian friends and two dogs, at the beginning of August, we took a trip around the Ionian Islands on a 30+ metre yacht. Being able to admire them from the water was something really special!

The Ionian Islands – a paradise little discovered

The Ionian Islands are located opposite the west coast of Greece. Their capital is the town of Corfu, located on the same name island. It is not a typically touristic place – the hotels you will meet here are rather small and located right by the sea.

Tourism is not the main source of income for the locals – rather, the region is famous for viticulture and olive trees, fishing and the broader food industry. The archipelago consists of a dozen larger and smaller islands, the most important of which are Kefalonia, Corfu, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Kithira, Ithaca (yes, yes – the same one from the myth of Odysseus) or Paksos.

Our quest to the Ionian Islands

Although our trip was organised on a spontaneous basis, we decided to explore the Ionian Islands in a non-stationary way, i.e. from the sea. Together with friends, we boarded a yacht belonging to a friend of mine and sailed the waters of the archipelago. In this way, we were able to see them from a completely different perspective than people choosing to holiday on one.

Such a tour is not only incredible freedom and joy to be on the water but also an opportunity to view their beauty from the sea. I won’t forget these views for the rest of my life – majestic high rocks rising out of the sea, water a shade of blue to fall in love with, and incredible sunsets.

What makes the Ionian Islands so special?

Above all, the lower tourist traffic sets the Ionian Islands apart from other Greek islands. Here you won’t find moloch hotels and luxury resorts. Rather, it is a holiday destination for people who appreciate peaceful holidays surrounded by beautiful nature. Picturesque coves, beautiful beaches, Greek villages, green hills and unspoilt nature are the hallmark of most of them.

Since we sailed on a yacht and our holiday life took place primarily on board, I did not have the opportunity to explore each of the islands in detail, but in terms of the view from the sea, I was captivated by Kefalonia and Zakynthos.
