Magdalena Abakanowicz’s art: a very good investment
Magdalena Abakanowicz is an outstanding Polish artist whose works, admired the world over, are a great investment of capital.
Some time ago, I had the opportunity to visit Desa, where I admired contemporary art. I was very impressed by the works of Magdalena Abakanowicz, and it is to her that I would like to dedicate today’s entry. Firstly, because she was a truly great artist. Secondly, because an auction of her works is soon to be held. And thirdly, because contemporary art is an excellent investment of capital.
Magdalena Abakanowicz: much more than just the abakan creator
Most of us associate Magdalena Abakanowicz’s name with abakan, or monumental spatial constructions, for which she used various kinds of fabric, as well as stones, wood and bronze.
Abakanowicz was born in Falenty near Warsaw in 1930, the daughter of a noblewoman and a descendant of the Polish Tatars. Initially, nothing indicated that Magdalena would become an artist – in her youth, she was interested primarily in athletics, in which she achieved considerable success: in 1947, at the Polish championships, she won gold in the 100-100-200-500 meter relay, and in 1948, silver in the 4 x 200 meter relay.
However, it was art that became her lifelong love – Abakanowicz graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the Academy of Fine Arts in Sopot. She quickly became known as a creator of a unique style – her abacans, about which I wrote earlier, became her trademark.
Abakanowicz began using weaving techniques in her works in the 1960s. She proved that compositions made of artistic textiles do not have to be flat. Her spatial textile sculptures used, among others, cordage, wool, linen, thread or sisal – the artist was fascinated by the variety of textures she could obtain in her sculptures thanks to the use of various materials.
Magdalena Abakanowicz, who passed away 4 years ago, is one of the icons of Polish contemporary art and a sculptor known to the whole world. Apart from Abakanowicz’s works, she has created many sculptures in bronze, granite and cast iron, and her works can be found in the largest cities of the world.
