Ferrari SF90 Spider: a 1000hp hybrid

I must admit that with each new model Ferrari surprises me more. The most powerful currently mass-produced car from the Maranello factory generates 1000 HP, and accelerates to “one hundred” in 2.5 seconds. Moreover, it looks amazing and has one feature that I particularly like: it is a convertible. The first ordered copies are just reaching customers, so I thought it was a good time to write a short text about this car.

Hybrid on steroids

Ferrari unveiled the new SF90 Spider in November 2020. Due to the pandemic circumstances, the classic presentation turned into an online event, but the car made a huge impression on me anyway.

First, I was blown away by its power. In the most powerful version, the hybrid system (4-liter turbocharged V8 and three strategically placed electric motors) generates … 1000 HP with a torque of 900 Nm. Such parameters guarantee amazing performance: with all the “horses” put to work, the SF90 Spider will go up to 340 km/h; using only electric motors it will accelerate to 135 km/h and continue for 25 km.

Secondly, it is a car which although heavier than the Stradale by about 100 kg has exactly the same performance.

Thirdly, the designers did their best when it comes to folding and unfolding the roof: the hardtop folds in 14 seconds (great!), it takes only 100 l when folded (vs. the customary 150-200) and you don’t have to stop to complete operations. What’s more, the aluminum used in the structure makes it lighter by about 40 kg than other solutions of this type.

It is also worth adding that the driver can choose from 4 predefined driving modes: eDrive (only electric motors), Hybrid (eco mode, optimizing fuel and energy consumption), Performance (maximum driving fun) and Qualify (the car works at the highest revs and will work beautifully on the track).

Outstanding design

As always in the case of cars with a kicking horse, the excellent aerodynamics go hand in hand with the design that makes my gasoline-powered heart beat stronger. The characteristic powerful yet slim silhouette, large wheels, and the combination of modern and classic looks give an amazing effect.

The interior is borrowed from the older brother, i.e. the Stradale – you will find the same clocks, displays and buttons here. The quality of upholstery also deserves a mention – I love the smell of good leather in cars!
