McLaren Speedtail: So fast, it’s ahead of its time
I haven’t written anything about fast and beautiful cars for a long time, so today I would like to devote a few words to an exceptional car, the McLaren Speedtail. It is true that the car had its premiere some time ago, but only this year, the first Speedtails from the limited edition of 106 cars come off the line and go to the lucky ones who had sufficiently thick wallets to buy this amazing car.
The fastest off the track
The McLaren Speedtail is the fastest off-track car. Its top speed is as much as 403 km/h – this is the speed achieved by the McLaren Hyper-GT XP2 prototype on the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds runway in the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The hybrid drive system (gasoline and double-supercharged V8 + electric motor) is responsible for such great performance, with amazing power of up to 1070 horsepower. Its torque is 1150 Nm. It is by far the fastest woking car from Woking that has ever been approved for off-track driving.
Interestingly, the Speedtail takes less than 13 seconds to show… 300 km/h on the speedometer! It does this by as much as 0.6 seconds faster than the Bugatti Chiron.
The driver sits… in the middle
The interior of the cabin resembles a cockpit with the driver in the middle and slightly ahead. Interestingly, the car has room for two passengers – one on the left and one on the right side of the driver. Indeed, the Speedtail is “like no other”, so the advertising slogan of the model fits like a glove.
A body from space
The Speedtail looks like it has come from space – not only figuratively but also literally. Over 5 meters long, the car has a very aerodynamic silhouette, which is associated with a flying vehicle of Batman himself, rather than a car driving on public roads. To limit resistance, the car has no side mirrors – instead it has two protruding cameras. Special wheel covers also take care of aerodynamics.
Batteries from the automotive future
The Speedtail is extremely advanced in terms of electric drive as part of a hybrid system. The batteries are light (approx. 30 kg), have an enormous peak power (270 kW) and are cooled with a thin oil with insulating properties
The price of this car in the standard option (standard option sounds like a joke in this respect) is PLN 9,000,000.
