In architecture, just as in culture, different styles come in different times and mark their spot on the timeline of history. However, there are certain movements and trends that, creatively transformed, can inspire people a few dozen or even a few hundred years after the heyday of the style. Modernism, or space for everyone
In short, Modernism was the answer to human needs related to accessibility of space, hygienic conditions of living and aesthetic surroundings. The core premise of Modernism was to subordinate the form to the function of a building and to stop designing and erecting over-ornamental and not functional buildings.
Polish Modernism came to life at a special time for our country – after over 120 of partitions, Poland began to rise from the ashes. Modernism, being a relatively young trend, perfectly matched the new reality and its objectives. In the inter-war period, in the 1920s and 1930s, many elitist modernist buildings were erected in Poland, including villas, public utility buildings or public administration offices. After WWII, the modernist assumptions served as the foundation for architects working in the Social Realism style, the final result was often not quite compliant with the modernist ideas.
Modernist villa in Józefów
Despite the regime changes of 1989 and the initial move away from modernism to more ornamental forms, great architecture has returned to the spotlight, still in a refreshed version. One example of this trend is the modernist villa in Józefów, available for sale through my company Crystal House.
