Top 3 ski destinations in Switzerland
Switzerland is above all a country known for chocolate, watches and mountains. It is the last of these three attractions that this post will be about.
The land of the Helvetians is definitely a ski heaven. In fact, the first ever great ski event Great Britain Cup in Alpine skiing was held in Wengen, in Switzerland in 1921. Why did the British ski down the hills of this town? Back in the early 20thcentury, Wengen was a popular resort among the royal subjects. The English have always been enthusiastic about winter sports but having no mountains or snow of their own, they picked a country which had an abundance of both.
Today, Switzerland is one of the favourite skiing destinations in light of the excellent snow conditions, fantastic infrastructure and an air of luxury that winter in this country always has. This is why today, I would like to tell you about three resorts I find the most interesting.
Gstaad
This Alpine town invites visitors with the slogan “Come up, slow down”. I must admit the slogan could not be more apt. The ski routes – and there are over 140 of them in the area– will satisfy the needs and expectations of both beginner and advanced skiers and snowboarders. Moreover, it is very easy to get to 6 other towns with excellent winter infrastructure from Gstaad. Cross-country skiing fans will also find something to their liking: there are over 80 km of routes available here. The Gstaad itself is a town as if taken straight out of an Alpine postcard – with a river flowing through the town, buildings typical for the region and numerous eateries.
Verbier
Verbieris situated in the French part of Switzerland, in the region of Four Valleys. There are as many as 400 km of ski routes in the area. Both experienced winter sports buffs and those looking for extreme thrills will finding something interesting here. However, hard work on the slope will pay off. Verbier is famous for its excellent restaurants recommended by the Gault Millau guide and even ones sporting Michelin stars. After a delicious meal, you can visit one of the many different spas.
Klosters
Klosters is a resort where you can come across royals! This town and the adjacent Davos have always been a magnet for the social elite from Europe. The local slopes will be perfect for advanced skiers but the less experiences will not be disappointed either. The longest route is 17 km-long! There is a total of 97 routes and 33 ski lifts. Cross-country skiers will be happy to hear there are 50 km of specialized routes.
