I am a very busy man, and therefore I appreciate all the R&R time I can get. If you are a regular reader of the blog, you probably know by now that I am into travelling, boxing, cars and great wine. These are the best activities and circumstances for me to rest in. This is why, when I stayed in France in the Loire Valley in early May, I indulged myself with a moment of relaxation and a glass of Vouvray appellation wine.

The Vouvray appellation covers wines that come not only from the village under the same name but also from five neighbouring counties as well. In total, there are 2,000 ha of vines there, primarily of the chenin blanc variety, although the arbois variety can also be used to make wines in this appellation. The wines manufactured here are still and sparkling white wines, from dry to sweet, so everyone will find something to their liking.

The kind of wine made each year depends largely on the weather. If the temperature throughout the year is low, dry and sparkling wines will be made from the grapes. In hotter weather, the grapes become perfect for making sweet wines and cordials. Interestingly, the natural acidity of the chenin blanc variety allows for a long ageing process and there are wines that have spent even 100 years in the cellar!

Wines that originate from this region are usually yellow-gold and have strong fruit flavours. Dry and semi dry wines pair well with fusion and oriental dishes, white meat and fish, while sparkling wines will make the perfect aperitif. As for the semi sweet and sweet wines, these will taste perfectly with sour desserts and mould cheese. The wines of Vouvrayare excellent on their ownthey are elegant and universal and as such are the ultimate companion of an afternoon break with a book or a moment of contemplation of the beautiful views of the central Loire Valley.
