Boxing: a sport that means money

Boxing is one of my favourite sports which I not only love to watch but also train for.

I am a big fan of boxing. And not only an “armchair fan” who watches the most interesting galas, but also an active amateur boxer. I had the opportunity to participate in the charitable Gala “Business Boxing Poland” in 2016. All proceedings from this event went to the Ewa Błaszczyk Foundation “Akogo?”

This type of physical activity suits me fine. Maybe because boxing requires strength, agility and speed from its adepts. And this is the simplest of all martial arts: it’s a competition between two boxers who use only fists and basically can perform only three types of blows: jab, cross and “hook”.

This type of hand-to-hand combat was already known in ancient Greece and was one of the disciplines played during the Olympic Games. Apparently the fights were extremely brutal and often ended with death of one of the players. Modern rules of this sport were created in the nineteenth century in Great Britain. With some modifications, they have survived to this day.

Boxing was included in the modern Olympics in 1904 and only once no Olympic champion of this sport was appointed: in 1912, during the games held in Sweden, where boxing was banned. Currently, boxers can prove themselves as amateur athletes (such are found at the games) and professionals who enjoy worldwide fame and very high wages for fighting, regardless of the result.

For most of us, professional boxing is associated primarily with large amounts of money. Players are very well rewarded. This should not come as a surprise, if we take into account that the three highest-grossing battles in the history have earned $ 500 million (Mayweather vs. McGregor), $ 410 million (Mayweather vs Pacquiao) and $ 150 million (Mayweather vs. Alvarez) respectively. Already from this brief compilation, it can be seen that Floyd Mayweather must be one of the best-earning boxers.

As for our Polish yard, there are many good boxers, but three of them are a class all the way. Krzysztof “Diablo” Włodarczyk, Tomasz Adamek and Dariusz Michalczewski are names recognisable not only to fans of this sport.

And although boxing can be a very traumatic sport, the training gives a lot at every level: it improves overall fitness and strength, teaches humility (because there will always be someone better) and gives an incredible energy kick after each win. So … see you in the ring!
